The Spurs began in 1967 as the Chicago Spurs of the National Professional Soccer League, relocating to Kansas City when that league merged with the United Soccer Association to form the North American Soccer League in 1968. Playing out of Municipal Stadium and later Pembroke Stadium, Kansas City led the league in attendance in 1968 and reached the semifinals.

The Spurs won the championship outright in 1969, but the arrival of a major league baseball expansion club that same year crowded them out of the city's summer sports calendar, and the team folded after the 1970 season.
