The Houston Mavericks were one of the original ABA franchises in 1967, starting poorly when a money dispute caused the team to miss the first four rounds of the draft. Coached by Hall of Famer Slater Martin, the club's lack of talent left it last in league attendance.

Financial trouble led the owner to hand the team to the league, and commissioner George Mikan began sending players to Houston — moves that looked poor given Martin's history as Mikan's former Lakers teammate, and Martin resigned. The team was sold and moved after the 1968–69 season, becoming the Carolina Cougars in 1969 and later the Spirits of St. Louis in 1974.
