About the Houston Mavericks
The Mavericks were one of the ABA's eleven charter franchises in 1967, owned by T.C. Morrow and coached by Slater Martin (a former NBA point guard who'd won four championships with the Lakers and Hawks). Playing at Sam Houston Coliseum, the Mavericks finished 29–49 in their inaugural season behind Larry Jones, Don Kojis, and Maurice McHartley.
The 1968–69 season under coach Jim Weaver was even rougher — the Mavericks went 23–55 and barely drew flies in a Houston market dominated by college basketball at the University of Houston (where Elvin Hayes had just played his last season). After two losing seasons and weak attendance, the franchise was sold to a North Carolina ownership group and relocated as the Carolina Cougars for 1969–70 — where they'd later win an Eastern Division title under Larry Brown. Houston wouldn't get pro basketball back until the Rockets relocated from San Diego in 1971. The Mavericks throwbacks are an essential piece of Bayou City basketball history.
