The Houston Colt 45's were one of two National League expansion clubs to debut in 1962, staffed largely by the front office of the former Houston Buffaloes and managed in all three seasons by Harry Craft. Colt Stadium, the open-air home built in the shadow of the future Astrodome, was hot, humid, and famously mosquito-infested. Despite promising young talent, the club never finished above .500 and ranked last in attendance in two of its three seasons.

Colt Stadium and the Colt 45's name were retired when the Astrodome opened for the 1965 season, and the franchise took a new nickname inspired by Houston's role in the space program. The old stadium was later dismantled, its parts shipped south to build two ballparks in Mexico. Notable Colt 45's included Joe Morgan, Jimmy Wynn, Turk Farrell, Rusty Staub, and Bob Aspromonte.
