The Detroit Cougars were an early Motor City venture into professional soccer, debuting in 1967 in the United Soccer Association before joining the newly formed North American Soccer League for the 1968 season. Home matches were played at Tiger Stadium, shifting occasionally to the University of Detroit Stadium when baseball scheduling conflicted.

The 1968 season was rough — the Cougars finished last in their division and folded at season's end. Backed by prominent local sports owners, the club was an ambitious but short-lived experiment in bringing soccer to Detroit during the sport's first American wave.
