The Sugar Kings began as a lower-level club until owner Bobby Maduro bought the team with the goal of pushing it up to the major leagues. The club rose to the top level of the minor leagues and adopted the slogan "un paso más y llegamos" — one more step and we arrive — a nod to being one rung from the majors.

During a 1959 game, celebratory gunfire outside the stadium marking the Cuban revolution struck two players inside the ballpark. As US–Cuba relations deteriorated and opposing teams refused to travel to Havana, the franchise relocated to Jersey City. Notable Sugar Kings included Sandy Consuegra, Connie Marrero, and Mike Fornieles.
