The Buckeyes split home games between Cincinnati and Cleveland in their first season, and a car accident on the way to a game killed two players and injured three others — the team played out the year anyway, losing every remaining game.

The club rebounded in later seasons, winning two Negro American League titles and the 1947 Negro World Series. Notable players included Quincy Trouppe, Sam Jethroe and Eugene Bremer.
