Originally founded as the Nashville Standard Giants, the team quickly renamed itself the Elite Giants and joined the Negro National League in 1929, moving through several cities before settling in Baltimore, where it is best remembered and won both of its championships.

Notable players included Roy Campanella, Leon Day, Junior Gilliam, and Joe Black.
