The Newark Eagles formed from a merger of the Newark Dodgers and Brooklyn Eagles in the Negro National League, building a powerhouse that fielded seven future Hall of Famers and a young Don Newcombe, later a Cy Young winner.

Co-owner Effa Manley ran day-to-day operations and remains the only woman inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Hall of Fame alumni included Ray Dandridge, Leon Day, Larry Doby, Monte Irvin, Biz Mackey, Mule Suttles, and Willie Wells. The franchise later moved and became the Houston Eagles.
