The Detroit Cougars brought top-flight professional hockey to the Motor City in 1926, when a Detroit group led by Charles A. Hughes purchased the Victoria Cougars of the Western Hockey League and relocated the franchise east. With the Detroit Olympia still under construction, the Cougars played their first season across the river at the Border Cities Arena in Windsor, Ontario, before moving into the Olympia for 1927–28, when Jack Adams joined as coach, beginning a 36-year run as coach or general manager that shaped the franchise.

Financial struggles led to a rebrand in 1930, ending the Cougars name after four seasons. Those first years laid the foundation for one of hockey's most enduring franchises.
