The original Portland Beavers began play in 1901 and took the Beavers name in 1903, winning six championships before withdrawing from the league in 1917 during World War I. Over the following century, professional baseball in Portland came and went, but the Beavers name remained a fixture of the minor leagues.

Four separate organizations wore the Beavers name across the 20th century, collectively winning nine championships. The final club played its last season in 2010, when PGE Park was remodeled for soccer and the team was left without a home. Hall of Fame alumni included Satchel Paige and Mickey Cochrane, along with Ray Fosse, Lou Piniella, Eddie Basinski, Luis Tiant, and Shawn Estes.
