What Were the Michigan Stags?
The Michigan Stags (1974) were a major professional ice hockey franchise that played part of one season (1974–75) in the World Hockey Association. The franchise was the relocated Los Angeles Sharks (1972–74), who moved from Long Beach to Detroit in summer 1974 hoping to capture the Detroit-area hockey market. The Stags played at the Cobo Arena. The franchise drew poorly and was financially distressed within weeks of opening night. In January 1975 — mid-season — the Stags relocated again, becoming the Baltimore Blades. The Stags name lasted approximately half a regular season. The franchise’s lifespan, geographically and financially, makes it one of the most fascinating cult-rarity entries in WHA history.
The Greatest Michigan Stags Players
Marc Tardif. Played briefly for the Stags before being traded.
Other notables. Bryan Watson, Steve Sutherland, Roger Cote, Veli-Pekka Ketola.
Venue
Cobo Arena, Detroit — the franchise’s only home for its half-season Michigan Stags era.
