The Racers were an 1974 expansion team in the World Hockey Association (WHA). Jacques Demers coached the team for two seasons, resulting in playoff appearances both years. With a merger with the established league on the horizon, ownership became concerned with rising costs. After an unsuccessful attempt to move to Canada, the team signed players to huge contracts they could not afford. Most notably a 17-year-old Wayne Gretzky was signed to one of the largest hockey contracts in history. Despite strong fan support, the team folded 25 games into the 1978-79 season due to financial problems.
