What Was the World Football League?
The World Football League (WFL) was the first major modern professional football league to challenge the NFL, operating in 1974 and 1975. Founded by Gary Davidson — the same entrepreneur who had launched the American Basketball Association in 1967 and would launch the World Hockey Association in 1972 — the WFL recruited NFL veterans with competitive salaries, opened markets the NFL had ignored (including Hawaii), and pioneered free-agency concepts that the NFL would eventually adopt.
The WFL collapsed mid-season in October 1975 due to financial difficulties — but in its short run it brought professional football to Birmingham, Memphis, Hawaii, Jacksonville, Philadelphia, and a dozen other cities for the first time, signed the Miami Dolphins' "Three Defectors" (Csonka, Kiick, Warfield), and demonstrated that pro football could thrive outside the NFL's monopoly.
The History of the WFL
The Founding (1973–1974). Gary Davidson announced the WFL in October 1973. The league launched in summer 1974 with twelve charter franchises in the U.S. and Honolulu.
The 1974 Season — Birmingham Wins It. The Birmingham Americans won the inaugural World Bowl by defeating the Florida Blazers. The Memphis Southmen, with Csonka, Kiick, and Warfield contracted to start in 1975, watched from the sidelines.
The 1975 Mid-Season Collapse. The 1975 WFL season opened with the Memphis Southmen now featuring Csonka, Kiick, and Warfield — and the Southmen (rebranded Grizzlies) raced to a perfect record. But the league's financial troubles became insurmountable and operations ceased on October 22, 1975. The Memphis Grizzlies were tied for the best record in the league when the league folded.
The Legends of the WFL
Larry Csonka, Jim Kiick, and Paul Warfield. The "Three Defectors." All three signed with the Memphis Southmen in 1974 (effective 1975) for combined contracts that exceeded any in pro football history at the time. Csonka was the reigning Super Bowl MVP. Their defection accelerated NFL salary inflation and forced the NFL to take the WFL seriously.
Daryle Lamonica. The "Mad Bomber" Oakland Raiders quarterback played briefly in the WFL.
Calvin Hill. The Dallas Cowboys running back played for the Hawaiians in 1975.
