About the Topeka Scarecrows
The Central Hockey League awarded Topeka, Kansas a franchise in February 1998. Ownership — Matt Perry, Bill Davidson and Jonathan Fleisig, who had owned other minor-league baseball and hockey clubs — ran a public name-the-team contest, and in April 1998 unveiled the Topeka ScareCrows name, leaning into a Wizard of Oz theme so completely that 50 local elementary students attended the announcement dressed as Munchkins. The club's mascot, Haymaker, and black-red-yellow-white color scheme became one of the most distinctive identities in 1990s minor-pro hockey. The Scarecrows played their home games at Landon Arena, part of the Kansas Expocentre.
Paul Kelly coached all three seasons. The Scarecrows went 28-38-4 in their 1998-99 debut, finishing fourth in the CHL's Western Division and making the playoffs before being swept by the Oklahoma City Blazers. They improved to 35-27-8 in 1999-2000 but missed the postseason, then went 38-23-8 in 2000-01 — their best regular season — while the league moved to terminate the franchise mid-season over unpaid financial obligations. A court injunction let Topeka finish the year; the Scarecrows made the playoffs but lost in the first round to the San Antonio Iguanas, and the franchise folded for good on April 12, 2001. Their Oz styling remains one of the most-collected looks of the late-1990s CHL, and it's the look we've reproduced here.
