The El Paso Buzzards brought professional hockey to far West Texas in 1996, joining the Western Professional Hockey League (WPHL) as a founding franchise. The Buzzards played at the El Paso County Coliseum and gave the desert border city its first taste of professional hockey, drawing surprisingly strong crowds for a market with no prior hockey tradition.
When the WPHL merged with the Central Hockey League (CHL) in 2001, the Buzzards played one final season in the expanded CHL before folding after 2001–02. The franchise's six-season run made the Buzzards one of the most-collected obscure late-1990s Texas hockey identities — built around the distinctive desert-buzzard logo and the unusual El Paso desert setting.
