The WLAF / NFL Europe began in 1991 as the World League of American Football, a transatlantic spring league launched by the NFL with franchises in the United States, Canada, and Europe. The original WLAF lasted two seasons before the NFL suspended North American operations after 1992, then relaunched the league in 1995 as a European-only competition.

Across both eras, the league produced fifteen World Bowls and served as a developmental pipeline for the NFL — sending hundreds of players from Europe and North America into the American game. The league rebranded from NFL Europe to NFL Europa in 2006 and dissolved after Hamburg's World Bowl XV title in 2007, ending sixteen total seasons of WLAF / NFL Europe / NFL Europa football.
