Widely regarded as one of the greatest teams of the Negro Leagues, the legacy of the Birmingham Black Barons is still reverberating to this day. Originally playing at the minor league level, the team was named after the still active Birmingham Barons which shared Rickwood Field. When the Black Barons made the jump to the major league level the team began to draw larger crowds than their white counterparts and national media prominence.
