The Stars began as an independent team in 1933 but joined the Negro National League the following season. In their first NNL season, the Stars won a highly controversial championship series over the Chicago American Giants in the NLB.

Although multiple Hall of Fame players would play for the Stars, they never reached the same level of dominance after their championship. Hall of Fame players included Oscar Charleston, Biz Mackey, Satchel Paige, Turkey Stearnes, and Jud Wilson.
