About the Breakers
The Breakers were the most well-traveled franchise in original USFL history — a single nomadic operation that played its three USFL seasons (1983, 1984, 1985) in three different cities. The Boston Breakers debuted in 1983 with games at Nickerson Field, Boston University's old ballpark. They drew respectable crowds but couldn't find a long-term home, and ownership relocated the team to New Orleans for 1984. The New Orleans Breakers played at the Superdome and finished 8-10 before owners moved the team again — this time to Portland, where the Portland Breakers played the 1985 season at Civic Stadium and went 6-12.
Each city's Breakers had distinct identities, color schemes and crowds, and the franchise never quite found stability. Stars like Marcus Marek (Boston), Buford Jordan (New Orleans), and Doug Woodward (Portland) gave the team competitive talent in spots, but ownership churn and three relocations in three years made consistent on-field success impossible.
The Breakers franchise effectively folded with the rest of the USFL after the 1985 season and the failed 1986 antitrust lawsuit. Its legacy is the unique distinction of being the only major American professional sports franchise to play in three different cities in three consecutive seasons. The Royal Retros Breakers collection honors every chapter — Boston, New Orleans and Portland — with apparel for spring-football collectors and fans of the deeper margins of the USFL story.
