The Pilots were originally slated to begin play in 1971. However, Missouri Senator Stuart Symington insisted that the new Kansas City Royals — established to replace the city's departed A's — take the field in 1969, and to keep the number of major leagues teams even, Seattle was forced to start early too. The accelerated debut proved disastrous: Sick's Stadium was barely equipped for minor-league use, let alone the majors. The team struggled on the field and finished last in attendance.

Unable to wait for a new stadium that never came, ownership declared bankruptcy in 1970 and the franchise was sold to a group from Milwaukee — relocating to the Midwest just days before opening day. Notable Pilots included Jim Bouton (whose tell-all diary Ball Four chronicled the season), Lou Piniella (spring training only), and Tommy Harper.
