For half a century the Oaks were the rivals of the cross-Bay San Francisco Seals in the minor leagues. While often overshadowed by the Seals' run, the Oaks captured five PCL championships of their own. While managing the Oaks, Hall of Famer Casey Stengel is credited with inventing the platoon system — starting different players based on opposing-pitcher matchups.

Their most famous club was the 1948 championship team known as the "Nine Old Men" — a roster largely composed of former major-league players. Hall of Fame Oaks alumni included Mel Ott, Joe Gordon, Ernie Lombardi, and Billy Herman.
