The Oakland Oaks were one of the original teams in the ABA and were named after a baseball team that had folded five years earlier. They were partially owned by entertainer Pat Boone. In their first season, the Oaks were the worst team in the league.

Major changes came the following season with the addition of coach Alex Hannum and All-Star Rick Barry, who was in a contract dispute with the cross-bay Warriors. The moves paid off, and the Oaks won the 1969 ABA championship. Attendance, though, continued to lag — the Oaks realized they could not compete with the Warriors in the Bay Area and after two seasons became the Washington Caps, then a year later the Virginia Squires. Notable players included Rick Barry (Hall of Fame), Larry Brown (Hall of Fame), Warren Jabali, Doug Moe, and Levern Tart.
