The New Jersey Generals played in both the original United States Football League (USFL) (1983–1985) and the revived USFL (2022–2023). The Generals were the highest-profile franchise of the original league and remain one of the most recognizable names in spring football history.
The original New Jersey Generals — owned briefly by oilman J. Walter Duncan in 1983 before being purchased by Donald Trump in late 1983 — captured the nation's attention by signing the biggest names in the sport. Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker bolted from the University of Georgia to become the franchise centerpiece, putting up three of the best statistical seasons in pro football history (including a record-setting 2,411 rushing yards in 1985). Quarterback Brian Sipe joined for 1984, and 1984 Heisman winner Doug Flutie signed in 1985, giving the Generals a marquee backfield. Coached by Walt Michaels, New Jersey went 6–12 in 1983 before surging to 14–4 in 1984 and 11–7 in 1985, advancing to the divisional round both years. The Generals' Madison Avenue presence, Trump-driven publicity, and big-name signings did as much as any single franchise to define — and ultimately sink — the original USFL's ambitions.
The revived New Jersey Generals returned in 2022 under head coach Mike Riley, finishing 9–1 in the regular season — the league's best record — before falling to the Philadelphia Stars in the conference championship. The Generals went 4–6 in 2023 before the USFL merged with the XFL to form the UFL.
