The Memphis Chicks trace their name to the Chickasaws, a Southern Association charter franchise that played at Russwood Park from 1901 until the ballpark was destroyed by fire in 1960. The name was revived in 1978, when the modern Chicks spent two decades as a Double-A minor league club at Tim McCarver Stadium.

Affiliated over the years with Montreal, Kansas City, San Diego and Seattle, the Chicks captured a Southern League title in 1990 as a Kansas City Royals affiliate before relocating to Jackson, Tennessee after the 1997 season to become the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. Their longtime ballpark honored Memphis native and former Chickasaw Tim McCarver.
