The Sugar Kings began as a lower-level club until owner Bobby Maduro purchased the team with dreams of bringing the minor leagues-leading franchise to the majors. The team moved up to the AAA level and adopted the slogan "un paso más y llegamos" ("one more step and we arrive") — referencing being just one rung away from the big leagues.

During a 1959 game, celebratory gunfire outside the stadium marking Castro's revolution actually struck two players inside the ballpark. As US–Cuba relations deteriorated, opposing teams refused to travel to Havana, and the franchise was relocated to Jersey City. Notable Sugar Kings included Sandy Consuegra, Connie Marrero, and Mike Fornieles.
