The Calgary Cowboys were the relocated Vancouver Blazers, moved east for the 1975–76 season after two seasons on the Pacific coast. Joining the World Hockey Association (WHA) at the Stampede Corral, the Cowboys brought top-tier professional hockey back to Calgary for the first time since the original Western Canada Hockey League era and gave the city a major-league identity well before its top-tier era arrived.

The Cowboys built one of the WHA's strongest crowds in their two Calgary seasons, with the Stampede Corral consistently among the league's most-attended buildings on a per-capita basis. Anchored by Andre Lacroix, Don Tannahill, and goalie Don McLeod, the Cowboys made the playoffs in both of their Calgary seasons before financial struggles forced the franchise to fold after the 1976–77 season. The Cowboys' iconic Western-themed jersey design — built around the rearing cowboy logo — remains one of the most-collected pieces of obscure 1970s hockey apparel.
