Widely regarded as one of the greatest teams of the NLB, the Birmingham Black Barons' legacy still reverberates today. Originally playing at the minor-league level, the team was named after the still-active Birmingham Barons, with whom they shared Rickwood Field.

When the Black Barons made the jump to the major-league level, the team began to draw larger crowds than their white counterparts and earned national media prominence. Notable players included Willie Mays, Satchel Paige, Mule Suttles, and Willie Wells.
