The Winnipeg Jets were the most decorated franchise in the seven-year history of the World Hockey Association, capturing three Avco World Trophies, including back-to-back titles in 1977–78 and 1978–79. Founded as part of the WHA's inaugural 1972 class, the Jets reshaped the league by signing Chicago Black Hawks star Bobby Hull to a then-record 10-year, $2.75 million contract.

Hull anchored a roster that came to feature Swedish stars Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson, one of the most prolific lines in the sport. When the WHA folded in 1979, the Jets were one of four franchises absorbed into the top tier of professional hockey.
