The Los Angeles Sharks were one of twelve founding franchises of the World Hockey Association, playing two seasons at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena and giving Southern California a major-league hockey alternative to the market's established top-tier franchise. Player-coach Terry Slater, defenseman Larry Hale, and Steve Sutherland anchored competitive rosters across both seasons.

Unable to break through in a market the established team already held, the Sharks were sold and relocated to Detroit for 1974–75, becoming the Michigan Stags. Their teal-and-yellow jerseys, featuring a toothy shark logo, remain one of the most beloved obscure 1970s hockey identities.
