The Chicago Sting were founded in 1974 and joined the North American Soccer League the next year, winning the Soccer Bowl twice, in 1981 and 1984, to become one of the most successful American outdoor soccer clubs of the era.

After four seasons playing the NASL's indoor circuit, the Sting moved permanently into the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1984. The NASL folded shortly after, and the Sting played out their run as an indoor club until folding in 1988.
