The Chicago Fire were charter members of the World Football League in 1974, playing at Soldier Field in a city where the NFL's Bears had deep roots. The Fire were one of the league's more competitive teams that first season, finishing 7–13 in the WFL's inaugural year under head coach Jim Spavital.
Mid-season financial trouble plagued the franchise, and the club was rebranded as the Chicago Winds for 1975 — the city's first non-NFL pro football team since the AAFC's Rockets and Hornets of the 1940s.
