The Birmingham Bulls were the relocated Toronto Toros, moved south by owner John Bassett for the 1976–77 WHA season and giving the Deep South its first major professional hockey team. The Bulls became known for signing teenage stars too young to play at the top tier of professional hockey — most notably the 1978–79 “Baby Bulls,” including Rick Vaive, Michel Goulet, Rob Ramage, Craig Hartsburg, and Ken Linseman — and for a brawling style that drew big crowds.

When the WHA folded in 1979, the Bulls were not among the four franchises absorbed into the top tier of professional hockey; the team moved into the Central Hockey League before eventually folding.
