The Baltimore Claws were the final chapter of a franchise lineage that ran from the 1967 New Orleans Buccaneers through stops as the Pros, Tams, and Memphis Sounds in the ABA. The team traded for Dan Issel but never paid the $500,000 required under the relocation deal, and Issel never joined the club.

The Claws played three preseason games and folded before the regular season began, ending the franchise's nine-year run.
