Minnesota was one of six expansion franchises added to the top tier of professional hockey in 1967, the league's “Original Six” doubling of size. Over 26 seasons at Bloomington's Met Center, the North Stars built one of the sport's most distinctive identities — green-and-gold sweaters, the North Star logo, and a devoted “State of Hockey” following.

The North Stars reached the Stanley Cup Finals twice. The 1981 team beat the Calgary Flames in the semifinals before losing in five games to the New York Islanders. The 1991 squad authored one of the great Cinderella runs in playoff history, upsetting the top-seeded Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues before falling to a young Pittsburgh Penguins team led by Mario Lemieux. The franchise relocated to Dallas in 1993, ending a 26-season run in Minnesota.
