The North American Soccer League brought big-time professional soccer to the U.S. and Canada from 1968 to 1984, born from the merger of two rival circuits. Early growth was rocky — 12 of the original 17 teams folded between the 1968 and 1969 seasons — but the league found its footing through the 1970s.

The New York Cosmos signing Pelé in 1975, followed by stars including Franz Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto, and George Best, turned the NASL into a genuine cultural moment; the Cosmos averaged more than 28,000 fans a game from 1977 to 1982. Over-expansion and economic strain followed, and the league folded in 1985 after playing its final season in 1984.
