The Kentucky Colonels played all nine seasons of the ABA, from 1967 to 1976, at Freedom Hall in Louisville — along with the Indiana franchise, one of only two ABA teams to stay in the same city for the league's entire run. Coached by Hall of Famer Hubie Brown, the Colonels won the 1975 ABA championship, beating the Indiana Pacers 4–1 in the Finals.

The roster was anchored by Dan Issel, 7-foot-2 center Artis Gilmore (1972 Rookie of the Year and MVP), and longtime point guard Louie Dampier. Despite consistent winning, the Colonels were not invited to merge into the NBA after 1976 and folded; owner John Y. Brown took the buyout and used it to purchase the Buffalo Braves.
