The ABCs were organized by the American Brewing Company as an independent team before being purchased by C.I. Taylor, who recruited his three brothers to play. The Taylor brothers were among the best players of their era, and the ABCs became a top team, helping found the Negro National League in 1920.

The organization struggled after Taylor's death, and the team folded following the 1926 season. In 1933, his brother Jim Taylor revived the club for three more seasons. Notable players included Oscar Charleston, Biz Mackey, and Ben Taylor.
