What Were the Phoenix Roadrunners?

The Phoenix Roadrunners (1974–1977) were a major professional ice hockey franchise based in Phoenix, Arizona that played three seasons in the World Hockey Association. The franchise was founded for the WHA’s 1974–75 expansion and was placed in Phoenix as a deliberate Sun Belt hockey experiment — testing whether non-traditional southern markets could support major-league hockey. The Roadrunners drew respectable crowds and proved the concept years before the NHL would expand to Phoenix (1996), Tampa Bay (1992), Florida (1993), and other Sun Belt markets. The franchise played its home games at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Roadrunners made the WHA playoffs in their final two seasons but didn’t advance deep, and the franchise folded with financial difficulties in 1977.
