The Phoenix Roadrunners were one of the most successful franchises of the late Western Hockey League (WHL) era and one of the most beloved teams of early Arizona pro sports. Founded in 1967 when a Phoenix ownership group purchased the Victoria Maple Leafs and relocated the franchise, the Roadrunners called the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum — affectionately known as "The Madhouse on McDowell" — home throughout their run.

Phoenix won back-to-back Lester Patrick Cups as WHL champions in 1972–73 and 1973–74, taking the final WHL title before the league folded. When the WHL ceased operations, the Roadrunners moved up to the World Hockey Association (WHA) with their roster largely intact, where they posted winning records and playoff berths in their first two seasons. The WHA Roadrunners' marquee player was American center Robbie Ftorek, who scored 117 points in 1976–77 and became the first American-born player to win the Most Valuable Player award in a major professional hockey league. Financial pressures forced the franchise to fold ahead of the WHA's final season in 1977.
