About Pro Basketball in New Jersey and New York

The metro area's alternative-league basketball history is enormous. The New Jersey Americans were ABA charter members in 1967–68, playing at Teaneck Armory before relocating to Long Island as the New York Nets. The Nets, with Rick Barry briefly and then Julius "Dr. J" Erving, became the gold standard of ABA basketball — winning championships in 1974 and 1976 — before joining the NBA in the merger and eventually returning to New Jersey.
