In 1994, the struggling New Jersey Nets considered a name change to the Swamp Dragons (Fire Dragons was also considered). The proposal made it as far as a league vote in which the name change was approved by all teams — except the Nets themselves, who changed their minds and voted against their own rebrand at the last minute.
The Swamp Dragons name and uniforms are widely regarded as one of the most famous never-was rebrands in pro basketball history.
