Every rink. Every league. Every era.
What Is Minor League Hockey HQ?
Minor League Hockey HQ is Royal Retros' hub for every level of professional hockey below the NHL — past, present, and future. Our current collection celebrates the historic leagues and teams that shaped the sport from the early 1900s through today, including the IHL, WHL (original), PCHL, PCHA, and CHL. We carry officially licensed jerseys, throwback T-shirts, hats, hoodies, and apparel for dozens of teams spanning over a century of minor league hockey history.
But Minor League Hockey HQ is built for the future as much as the past. We are actively working to become the official merchandise home for every current minor league hockey organization — including the AHL, ECHL, SPHL, NAHL, and beyond. Our vision is simple: one platform where every minor league hockey fan, from every market, can find their team's official licensed gear. Every Rink. Every League. Every Era.
The Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) — Where the Modern Game Was Born
The Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA), founded in 1911 by Lester and Frank Patrick in Victoria, British Columbia, was one of the most transformative organizations in the history of professional hockey. The PCHA didn't just play hockey — it invented the game as we know it. Lester and Frank Patrick introduced the blue line, the forward pass, the penalty shot, numbers on jerseys, and the playoff system — all innovations that the NHL eventually adopted and that define hockey to this day.
The PCHA operated from 1911 to 1924, fielding teams across the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia. Its franchises competed for the Stanley Cup multiple times, challenging the best teams in eastern Canada. The league merged with the Western Canada Hockey League in 1924, eventually folding into what became the NHL's western expansion. PCHA teams represented in the Minor League Hockey HQ collection include:
-
Vancouver Millionaires — The PCHA's greatest franchise, 1915 Stanley Cup champions, and home of the legendary Cyclone Taylor. Shop Vancouver Millionaires jerseys, T-shirts, and hoodies.

The Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHL) — The Post-War Western Standard
The Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHL) was the premier professional hockey league on the American Pacific Coast from the 1940s through the early 1950s. Operating in a region without NHL presence, the PCHL built devoted fanbases in cities that loved the game but couldn't support — or access — the Original Six NHL clubs. The league was a proving ground for players and a genuine professional product in its own right, before eventually merging to form the Western Hockey League.

The International Hockey League (IHL) — North America's Premier Minor League
The International Hockey League (IHL), which operated from 1945 to 2001 in its various forms, was the most prominent and respected minor professional hockey league in North America outside the NHL. At its peak in the 1990s, the IHL rivaled the AHL for top-tier minor league status, drawing significant attendance and featuring future NHL stars. The league spanned from Michigan to Minnesota to the West Coast, building passionate hockey communities in markets that the NHL hadn't yet reached.
The IHL was founded in 1945 in Michigan and grew steadily over five decades, eventually expanding into large markets and operating as a near-major league before financial pressures led to its dissolution in 2001. A new IHL later operated at lower professional levels, but the original IHL remains one of hockey's great minor league institutions.

What was the original WHL? The original Western Hockey League (WHL) — separate from the current junior hockey WHL — was a professional minor league operating from 1952 to 1974. It served the American Pacific Coast and West, fielding teams in cities like San Diego, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Denver, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, and Winnipeg. The WHL was the direct successor to the PCHL and was one of the most active professional hockey circuits of its era.
What was the PCHA? The Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA), founded in 1911, was one of the earliest and most innovative professional hockey leagues in history. Co-founded by Lester and Frank Patrick, the PCHA introduced the blue line, forward pass, penalty shot, numbered jerseys, and playoff system — all of which are now fundamental to hockey. PCHA teams competed for the Stanley Cup multiple times. The Vancouver Millionaires won it in 1915.
What was the PCHL? The Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHL) operated primarily in the 1940s and early 1950s as the premier professional hockey league on the American Pacific Coast. Teams like the San Francisco Seals, Los Angeles Monarchs, Portland Penguins, Seattle Ironmen, and Denver Spurs competed in a circuit that drew strong crowds in western markets before the WHL absorbed its franchises.

Why Royal Retros Is the Home of Minor League Hockey Gear
Royal Retros was built on a simple belief: every level of professional sports has a culture worth celebrating, and every fan — whether their team made the NHL or never left the minor leagues — deserves a place to find authentic gear that reflects their history. Minor league hockey has given the sport some of its greatest stories, most loyal fanbases, and most beloved characters. The IHL produced legends who never played a single NHL game but were heroes to the fans who packed those arenas. The PCHA gave us the modern sport itself. The CHL kept hockey alive in the American heartland for five decades.
Minor League Hockey HQ is our tribute to all of it. We have built relationships with rights-holders, produced authentic throwback gear for teams that haven't played in decades, and created a platform designed to grow alongside the current minor league hockey community. Whether you're a collector, a lifer fan, or a current AHL or ECHL supporter looking for a better gear experience, you've found the right place.
Our motto says it best: Every Rink. Every League. Every Era. From the ice barns of the original PCHA to the modern AHL arenas of today, every team that ever put players on the ice deserves to be remembered. That's what Minor League Hockey HQ is here to do.
