The original San Diego Gulls played in the Western Hockey League (WHL) for eight seasons. While successful, the team ceased play when the San Diego Mariners of the WHA came to town. Following this original version of the Gulls, the name became synonymous with San Diego hockey and four other teams would take the Gulls name.
