The Denver Spurs began play in the Western Hockey League in 1968 and moved to the Central Hockey League in 1974 when the WHL folded. The Spurs had an agreement to become an NHL team for the 1976-77 season, however the deal fell through when the NHL decided to hold off on expansion. Instead the team accepted a deal to join the WHA for the 1975-76 season. The Spurs had poor attendance and rumors were the NHL would be moving another team to Denver to take the place the Spurs would have had. The team moved to Ottawa to become the Civics and eventually the Colorado Rockies hockey team took their place.
