What Were the Los Angeles Sharks?
The Los Angeles Sharks (1972–1974) were a major professional ice hockey franchise that played two seasons in the World Hockey Association as a WHA charter franchise. The Sharks were placed in the Los Angeles area to compete with the NHL’s LA Kings, playing at the Long Beach Arena. The franchise made the WHA playoffs in 1973 but missed in 1974. Financial difficulties and the inability to build a fanbase led to the relocation to Detroit in summer 1974, where the franchise became the Michigan Stags (mid-season 1974–75) and then the Baltimore Blades (spring 1975) before folding entirely. The Sharks era was the franchise’s most stable.
The Greatest Los Angeles Sharks Players
Marc Tardif. Veteran scoring forward who started his WHA career with the Sharks before being traded to the Quebec Nordiques.
Other notables. Andre Hinse, Garry Bauman, Real Lemieux, Bob Shupe, Wayne Rivers.
Venue
Long Beach Arena — the Sharks’ home throughout their two-year LA tenure.
