About the Colorado Rockies (NHL)

The Colorado Rockies were the NHL's first Denver franchise, born when the financially troubled Kansas City Scouts relocated to Colorado after the 1975–76 season. The Rockies played six NHL seasons (1976–82) at McNichols Sports Arena and never finished above .500, but they produced one of the most colorful eras in 1970s hockey. Burgundy, blue and gold uniforms with a stylized "C" sun-mountain crest gave the team an unmistakable identity that has since become a vintage-hockey favorite.

The franchise's most famous chapter came during the 1979–80 season when Don Cherry was hired as head coach. Cherry's blunt media presence, behind-the-bench antics and clashes with Rockies management produced enough quotable moments to last decades — and would soon land him on the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast where he became one of the most polarizing figures in pro hockey. Wilf Paiement, Barry Beck, Lanny McDonald and goaltender Bill McKenzie were among the Rockies stars on the ice.

After the 1981–82 season the franchise relocated to New Jersey to become the Devils, and Denver wouldn't get NHL hockey back until the Quebec Nordiques relocated in 1995 to become the Avalanche. But the Rockies' six seasons remain a touchstone of vintage 1970s hockey — burgundy and blue uniforms, an unmistakable logo, and the strange charm of pre-1990s Denver pro sports.
