The Colorado Rockies — not to be confused with the current Major League Baseball team of the same name — played six seasons in Denver after relocating from Kansas City, where the franchise had begun in 1974 as the Kansas City Scouts. Anchored by winger Lanny McDonald (acquired in 1979), Wilf Paiement, and Barry Beck, the Rockies reached the playoffs in 1977–78 despite a 19-40-21 record.

The franchise cycled through eight coaches, including Don Cherry, and never posted a winning season in Denver. Owner Jack Vickers' petroleum business collapsed in 1978, leaving the team without revenue from parking, concessions, or advertising, and in 1982 the Rockies were sold to a shipping executive and relocated to New Jersey, where the renamed franchise continued on. Denver went without major professional hockey again until the mid-1990s.
