The Browns had little success on the field, but were the most popular team in the city during the early years. In 1944 the Browns played the rival St. Louis Cardinals in their only World Series appearance. The Browns lost in six  games and it became clear the city could no longer support two teams. When Gussie Busch bought the Cardinals and their stadium, the Browns could no longer compete and moved to Baltimore. Despite a mediocre run, many great players suited up for the Browns including, Satchel Paige, Dizzy Dean, Rogers Hornsby, Heinie Manush, George Sisler, Goose Goslin, Jesse Burkett, Rube Waddell, Eddie Plank, Jim Bottomley, Rick Ferrell, and Bobby Wallace.
