The Atlanta Flames were one of two expansion franchises added to the top tier of professional hockey in 1972. The name was a tribute to the burning of Atlanta during the Civil War — a uniquely Southern identity for a sport with deep Northern and Canadian roots.

Built by inaugural and only general manager Cliff Fletcher and coached by Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion, the Flames were anchored by centre Tom Lysiak, their first-round pick in 1973 and the franchise's all-time scoring leader with 431 points. Winger Eric Vail led the Atlanta era in goals with 174. They posted six straight winning or .500 seasons from 1975 to 1980 but never broke through in the playoffs, going out in the first round five years running.

Falling attendance and ownership instability forced the franchise to move west after the 1979–80 season, closing Atlanta's first chapter of legacy hockey. The city waited nineteen years for another team — and lost that one too.
